The ancient Egyptian Queen Berenice II was said to possess long, glamorous locks of unparalleled beauty. Praying for the safe return of her husband, who had gone to war, the queen turned to the gods. Hoping for her prayers to be answered, she sacrificed her most cherished worldly possession- her beloved hair. Berenice cut off her hair and made a tribute of her beautiful, flowing locks to the Goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. Placed upon the goddess’s altar, the hair was said to have disappeared the next day. Legend has it that Aphrodite accepted the queen’s tribute, and had her silky hair cast into the heavens as the constellation “Coma Berenices”- Berenice’s Hair.
